Internet Marketing Is Not As Easy As You Think
There are countless products online trying to sell you the quick fix, get-rich-quick schemes; people working from home in their underwear making six figures. You sit back and think to yourself “I want to sit in MY underwear and work from home too!” People become so enticed with the goal that they forget there is a process to get there. They want the fastest, easiest, short cut (I don’t blame them. Who doesn’t want the easy way if you can get it?). Allow me to explain why I believe people think it’s too hard.
It Is Hard Work
Unfortunately it’s not that easy. Many people find out real fast how difficult it is and likely give up on the minute of euphoria they had thinking about sitting in their underwear. And then they go back to their regular scheduled program.
The problem isn’t the difficulty – it’s the expectation that it’s going to be easy. We as humans get upset and give up when we set expectations that aren’t met. Why would anyone think starting a business is easy? Where does that expectation come from? Ask anyone who has succeeded and nobody, not a single person, will tell you it was easy.
Ask yourself these questions:
- In your current job, did you know or learn how to do everything you do in a week or two?
- In your current job/business, did you buy a couple of books, read some content and become successful or good at what you do?
- Were you born with the knowledge and skills you have?
I’m going to guess no, no and no again.
Expectations
Internet Marketing is a skill like any other. It requires education, it requires practice and has a learning curve like absolutely everything else you have ever done since you took your first breath of air. The only difference now is you expect it to come easy because of all the get-rich-quick promises and the lure of the freedom.
You have a Freedom Target of some kind, and you’d love to get there easily, but it’s not going to happen. What is going to happen is that if you focus and put your mind to it, you will have it. It’s not easy, and if your past experiences are a good indication, it will take time. However, after you invest the time and do the work – the rewards are huge. The freedom is unimaginable and the happiness that comes with it all is priceless.
If it came easy, it wouldn’t be worth fighting for. There is very little that is impossible. It’s only expectations that get in the way. If you expected to spend the next five years learning Internet Marketing and you are okay with that; and ready to put the time in; I can almost guarantee you’ll be successful. If you expect to do it over night, you will be unhappy and unsuccessful – wrong expectation.
What if I could promise you $500,000/year working from home, would that interest you? People do it all the time, but there is a catch to getting there:
- You have to continue your current job to make ends meet.
- You have to put in all the extra time and effort on a regular consistent basis after hours.
- You will miss out on fun times now, some weekends, watching TV, going out.
- You will not have as much spending money, as you’ll be investing it in learning and taking action with Internet Marketing. That means cutting out buying clothes, going out, dining out, things you enjoy doing.
- Do this for 3-5 years
That doesn’t sound fun at all. But if you were making $500,000/year in 3-5 years, would that change your mind? (I am not guaranteeing you will, but it’s totally possible. There is no other area of business in the world that offers everyone the same opportunity).
$500,000 may seem outrageous to you, and if it does (don’t be afraid to dream big) then aim smaller. How much money per month would you need in order to quit your job and work from home? Probably not that much. How about $5000/month ($60,000/year). Does that seem a little easier to achieve? It requires the same work ethic and the same skill, but seems more attainable. Imagine $60,000 a year working from your house with no boss to check in with or meetings to deal with – you too can sit in your underwear at home and get paid.
Think about the sacrifice, is it worth it? Or is it more important to be able to have your free time (whatever little you have working 40+ hours a week), spending money, going out with friends and (the kicker) making the same amount of money as you are today 3-5 years from now. Does that sound like a great deal?
It Can Be Easier
You will never be truly free and successful while being paid for your time. I can almost guarantee it. There are always exceptions, but it’s true. If you’re okay with that then that’s fine too But I imagine you’re reading this because that thought registers with you too, and you’re looking to do something more than be paid for your time.
If you’re stuck and lacking motivation; if you feel you don’t know where to go from here; I believe you need the help of a mentor…Someone who IS successful at Internet Marketing and in the business of helping you rather than you doing it all yourself. If this is something you think you would benefit from, then I highly recommend James Schramko’s SuperFastResults coaching forum. I’ve talked about it countless times only because I truly believe it to be such an amazing and powerful tool.
Freedom tip: Don’t expect success overnight, don’t expect easy; do expect hard work, less money, less sleep, and less fun. But once that time has been put in…the rewards go on forever!
PS – Do you think you procrastinate? Why do you think that is? Leave a comment if you’d like to share.

Hey Kevin,
Great post! I especially love that you said you should expect to work hard for 3-5 years before achieving any substantial results. I started a medical education company online in 2009 and although I’ve seen some decent results, it truly is a learning process and you have to actively be looking for the education to take the next step (as with blogs such as yours). One area I wanted to suggest your readers also check out is the Warrior Forum, if you look hard enough you can get a PhD in Internet Marketing there.
Anyhow, great blog, I just also watched your optimize press video because I’ve been meaning to grab it to improve the visual presentation of my business, and I’ll be using your affiliate link, I appreciate the job you did in going over it for me.

Hey Paul, thanks for your input and glad you liked it. I find a lot of people get into trying to make money online usually because they’re unhappy, need money etc. So there is a desire for it to just happen as quick as possible not realizing it’s like any business and will take you time and work!
The warrior forum certainly does have a lot of information, but I caution people about it as you can also just get sucked into a lot of the negativity of people not succeeding and quite frankly spending too much time reading and not enough time doing!
The biggest impact for me has been masterminds/coaching. I wouldn’t be here today otherwise which is why I started up http://www.actiontrackinsiders.com to help the same way I was helped.
Good luck with your OptimizePress, it’s a fantastic theme.

You have a good point, WF is definitely something that can waste away the hours. I also agree that a coach is the best way to succeed online, I actually did have a mentor who helped me get my medical education business off the ground. I’m starting to realize since adding the IM niche to my business that I am going to need a mastermind group of other IMers so I can make the contacts like you mentioned in your eBook, so thanks for that advice.
Do you still recommend joining SuperFastResults as a way of getting some new contacts and JV partners, or have you found anything else that may be better. Having been successful with one online business I know I’ll be alright with IM, just looking to speed up the results with some solid friends in the business. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Paul
